Honest Water Co. of the Palm Beaches

What hard water quietly costs a Florida home every year

People usually call us about how their water feels, tastes or smells. The expensive part is the bit you cannot see, and it has been running in the background for years.

The water heater

This is the big one. Hardness minerals come out of solution when water is heated and settle as scale on the element or the tank base. Scale is an insulator, so the heater burns more energy to deliver the same hot water and runs hotter internally while doing it. Heaters on hard water fail early, and they rarely fail at a convenient moment.

A tankless heater is worse rather than better on hard water, the heat exchanger passages are narrow, and manufacturers typically require regular descaling for the warranty to stay valid.

Soap, detergent and everything you buy to fight limescale

Hard water reacts with soap instead of lathering with it, so you use more of everything: laundry detergent, dishwasher tablets, shampoo, body wash. It also leaves residue behind on skin and fabric, which is why towels go stiff and why people describe hard-water skin as tight or itchy after a shower.

Then there is the second shelf of products bought purely to deal with the first problem, descaler, rinse aid, shower-door spray, kettle cleaner.

Fixtures, glassware and appliances

Scale fogs a shower door days after you clean it, spots glassware out of the dishwasher and blocks the holes in a shower head. Dishwashers and washing machines both have heating elements and narrow passages, and both live shorter lives on hard water.

Work out your own number

Rather than quoting a national average at you, add up yours:

  • What did your last water heater cost installed, and how old was it when it went?
  • What do you spend a year on detergent, rinse aid and anything aimed at limescale?
  • How many shower heads, kettles or coffee machines have you replaced sooner than you expected?
  • What are you spending on bottled water?

That total is what you are already paying, every year, without anything to show for it. The honest comparison is not “system versus nothing” it is “system versus what hard water is quietly costing you anyway”.

And it is not the same everywhere in this county

How much of this applies to you depends on which supply you are on, the county utility, Seacoast, Boca’s own plant, or a well. That is the whole reason we test at your sink rather than quoting a county average. Fifteen minutes, free, and you read the result with us.

The fix starts with a number: book the free water test and know yours in fifteen minutes. Curious how your community compares first? See the water rankings for all 32 communities or the six questions worth asking any water company, including us.

Questions about this article

Does hard water damage a water heater?

It shortens its life. Hardness minerals settle as scale on the element or tank base when water is heated, and scale insulates, so the heater burns more energy for the same hot water and tends to fail early.

Is hard water a health risk?

Hard water is a nuisance rather than a health hazard. The EPA groups hardness, deposits and scale with the aesthetic and technical effects covered by its secondary standards, and the cost shows up in appliances, fixtures and detergent.

How much does a softener and reverse osmosis system cost?

Our softener plus reverse osmosis package starts at $2,850 installed, with a lifetime warranty. The free in-home test turns that into an exact price for your home before you decide, so you can set it against what hard water already costs you.
